Back to School Shopping

Some families have made a tradition out of back to school shopping.  This is a great way to have fun and get all the supplies and clothes the kids need for school.  You can make a day of it.  Go out to eat or have a picnic lunch.  Go to different stores and chase those back to school sales.  No matter how you do it, enjoy the day and the time spent with your family.

Collections

Collecting certain things can become a family tradition.  Some people collect model cars, Breyer horses, or other figurines.  Precious Moments is a popular one. But it doesn't just have to be things like this.  Some people collect certain brand names like John Deere, Nascar items (some collections pertain to specific drivers), metal signs, and many many more.  Everyone can find something they wish to collect and pass down from generation to generation.

My son collects trains, John Deere items and movies, and cars from the Cars movies.  I collect horses and books by Mercedes Lackey.  It doesn't matter what you collect, as long as you enjoy and share your collections.

The Demolition Derby

Who can forget the great american demolition derby!  What's more fun than watching a bunch of big old cars hit each other until only one is left?  Demo derbys are always a favorite with kids, adults, and anyone inbetween.  It's a great way for the family to spend an evening.  You see a lot of action, tempers fly, and the cars are built just for this event.  The fans cheer their favorite drivers and the loudest hits.  And, this doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to do.  So pack up the family for the annual demo derby and get ready to get dirty!

The Traditional RV

If you like to travel a lot, then you probably get out the RV  or camper alot. And why not?  You can be like a turtle and have your home away from home with you wherever you go.  You can save the hassle of finding a hotel.  You can camp just about anywhere with an RV or camper.  You can stay (within reason and the law) where you want to.  You can even get an RV  or camper with a section in the back for your horses, or your ATV'S.  When you visit relatives on the annual trip, you can still have your own personal space.  You can start your own traditions with your RV or camper.

Horse Racing

Another type of racing that many have made a tradition out of is called "The Sport Of kings".  Horse racing is so named because in old times, horses were tested against each other to entertain and honor the past kings of some countries.  Only the best horses from the king's stables were permitted to run.

But today, this is a multi-million dollar industry that is open to just about all classes and levels of horses, owners, and fans alike.  Who doesn't love to watch the beauty and majesty of these terrific animals as they fight for the wire.  The best known race around the world is The Kentucky Derby.  Famous people from all over the world take part in this particular race.

So if you want something that is fun to do, head to the nearest track.  Maybe even place a bet or two if you feel lucky.  The whole family can enjoy this tradition that is The Sport Of Kings.

The Zoo

Nothing beats a trip to the zoo for the animal loving family.  There are so many to choose from.  It doesn't matter if you go across the country, or across town.  The zoo is always fun and educational.  There is something that everyone will enjoy.

If you go to a large zoo, such as The Henry Dorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska, you can make a few days of fun.  Larger zoos often have more shows, animals, and activities to choose from.  There is always something going on.

For a one day thing, I suggest a smaller local zoo, such as Blank Park in Des Moines, Iowa.  You can see everything in one day and still participate in the activities such as feeding some animals, seeing a sea lion show, and the bird show.

Almost all zoos have an interactive petting zoo and either camel and/or elephant rides.  These things allow you to get up close and personal with the animals and their caretakers.

If you love animals, don't forget to go to the zoo.  It really makes a great family day (and wears the little ones out).
